Hamlin, ME St Joseph's Catholic Church.

The building on the right was a three room schoolhouse. There was a bomb shelter built underground behind it.

I went to school here. Far end was K-1, middle was 2,3,4. and this end was 5,6,? Started busing to VB for 6th. I still don't understand how teachers taught 3 grades at once. We had lunch served in the basement of the church. Mrs. Parent was a good cook. My Dad was head of Civil Defense for Hamlin then and bomb shelters were common. You can see the two air pipes from the mound back right of the school. They built a some of them from large tanks that were cut in half and buried. The shelter, school and rectory are all gone. My Mom, Frances, was buried in the cemetery a couple years ago.

Went to Mass there every Sunday, Got Married there in 1967, Religion in the school house after Mass. All my three boys went to Head Start there, A lot of Memories in Hamlin, Funeral for my Parent 'Aunts Uncles Cousins, And the Latest was my Son in 2014,I am from Caswell , Thank You for Posting Love it.

A lot of Memories , Love it and Thank You

Went to church there every Sunday, sang in the choir and ,many bake sales and activities that our family was involved in held in the church basement. Got married at St. Joseph in 1963.Father Mielancion was the parish priest at that time. Also remember Father Dube very well, he was so strict with us kids....
I visit the church and cemetery each time I am home, many relatives buried there.
Thank you so much for sharing,I always enjoy memories from home...

Just had my Brother Dale's funeral there 2 weeks ago. He's buried in the cemetery behind the church. I used to sing in the folk group in high school in late 70's-early '80's. Lots of memories there.

I was an altar server and a lector there, until this past summer. I helped my Grandpa, Rudy Parent, mow the lawn and weed-wack around the church and cemetery once last summer. I was the flower girl in my parents' wedding and one of my aunt's as well. I was also a junior bridesmaid in my other aunt's wedding over here. There are so many memories at this church, and it amazes me to see these vintage photos.

My parents were married in this church in July 1952

I was born in Caswell,Maine ,Baptiise by Father Dube in 1939 but I never live in that area,I lived in North Caribou which was Sacard Heart Church. The reason I know about St. Joseph later on when I was growing up I needed church record from the Hamlin church

My parents are buried in the graveyard there. All twelve of us kids were baptized, and confirmed in this church.

I grew up here. Our house was located behind the school by the graveyard. From 9 months old till 6th grade and until we had 6 kids I lived there. Then we moved down the road half a mile where Dad built our two story home. It's still there.

My farther Raymond J Cyr and all is brothers sisters were baptized there. They were the children of Jean(John) and Lucy Cyr of Hamlin. My father dug graves there when growing up. The Guy Cyr road was named after his uncle. My grandfathers brother.

Roger Cyr ... my name is Dinah Cyr granddaughter of Fred S Cyr brother to Guy Cyr ... I don’t recognize your grandfather’s name ... where did he move to ... I’ve lived here all my life and grandfather Fred was Sexton at St Joseph’s when my father Peter was growing up .. Dad would have been 89 years come January... I’m interested in knowing more

This is were Mom Dorothy Cyr Levesque and Dad Andrew Levesque got married and cemetary where our brother Roy Levesque and Grandfather Soleme Cyr and grandmother Marie Cyr are buryed and several relatives are buryed there.. Not shore if this is where Mom went to school to 6th grade.

I went to 2 years of head start in that little school. I still remember how it smelled, the overgrown old swings and whenever we had a patent teacher thing or a church thing i used to wonder through the cemetary putting wildflowers on graves. Was so sad when they tore it down.

Wonderful image!! My family moved in to the rectory around 1978, we became the caretakers of the church and grounds. I was the bell ringer, and shared grave yard mowing duties with my brothers. We used to make a complex tunnel system in the winter months when Jerome Morrissey would plow the church driveway and bank it all up high behind the rectory, we loved it! My two older siblings and I graduated high school in Van Buren, then a few years later my folks and younger brother moved away. I see there are Morrissey's who have posted here (Hello Hello!!), what a large lovely family who felt like my family too! Jerome was a gem of a man! Adelia had mad knitting skills!! And all the kids were bright-eyed with big hearts! I never knew they had a home on the church grounds early on... great little nugget of history! Whenever I am home visiting family, I stop by St. Josephs, it always pulls at my heart to see the old rectory is gone. I'm grateful and delighted that this image is on the web and that folks are posting about their memories! I may not have lived my whole life at St. Joseph's, but when I think of "where I'm from", I think of little Hamlin Maine and the fine folks who influenced my life to such a meaningful degree in the years to come. Thank you everyone!
