Old Seth Burgess homestead (c. 1840's) on Main Road (Rt. 209) in Phippsburg, Maine.

4 Oak Ledge Lane in Phippsburg, Maine. Oak Ledge Lane is actually the dirt road in the middle of the picture - since 1964 it has been extended further into the property and other houses have been built. This particular land was sold to Seth Burgess (yeoman or farmer) by a Richard Gardiner in the 1820/30 time period (I will have to look up the deed to verify). At some point in time (late 1840's) virtually the entire Burgess family died in the space of five months or so (excepting Seth's wife Elizabeth). The article that I read about this mentioned that Seth Burgess was a Sea Captain at the time of his death, which makes me wonder if that Seth was a son of the first Seth. Seth's son Timothy, who was living in Winnegance and operating as part owner of a tide mill, eventually inherited this property after his mother passed on. Probably more confusing than helpful...

At the time of this photo it was owned by Ralph & June Pye
