Shibles Farm

This was my grandparent's farm in 1963, and is now my uncle's. The biggest changes from this picture are across the street from the barn is a house built for my grandparent's to move into in the 1970s when my uncle's family came to live in the house pictured. My grandfather suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis, and my uncle's family moved to the farm to help my grandmother. Also the old barn had an addition built right around 1980 with milking stations for the cows. The other major change is that the Belfast and Moosehead Lake railroad that used the railroad tracks pictured, ceased to exist a few years ago. The tracks are essentially abandoned now.

It is a magical place and absolutely my favorite place on Earth.

Incorrect on the railroad being abandoned. The railroad is active from the outskirts of Belfast to Burnham Junction. It is NOT abandoned or “essentially abandoned”.

This was my parents farm where I grew up. Owned by my brother since the mid 1970s. I loved and admired all those beautiful elms, long since succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. I would hail the 1:07 pm train, by the road crossing in winter, and travel 3 miles to town for a haircut, returning on the 3:15. The railroad has only a few excursion trains a year now, mainly at the time of the Common Ground Fair.
