Buxton, Maine, with Flaggy Meadow Rd in foreground (old barn still standing), and Church Hill Rd in background. Highland Cemetery in top right corner of picture.

The church on the hill is The North Congregational Church. It was built in 1820 and completed for services in 1821. The bell was made in Boston by Paul Revere's foundry. The organ is the original and one of only two like it left in this area. In the 70's the steeple was blown off and it went through the roof when Hurricane Gloria blew through Groveville. We had many fund raisers to earn enough money to have the steeple builders rebuild this beautiful structure!

My Mom and Dad worked faithfully to help maintain his church for decades. Dad is buried immediately behind the Fellowship Hall that he, my husband and a friend built in the late 1990's. Now he can forever enjoy the ringing of the bell every Sunday morning from a heavenly perspective!

Correction to the bit of history above. Hurricane Gloria hit Maine in 1985 not the 1970's!

My Grandparents home and the church I grew up in. My brother lives there now

Hi Janice, thanks for sharing your memories! It's great to hear that your grandparents' home and the church were a big part of your life. Can you tell us more about what it was like growing up in that area during 1967? We'd love to hear about any significant changes you've noticed since then. Also, did your family engage in any particular type of farming on the property?
