Not much left of the old zinc mine. The main buildings are still there but the silos and storage tanks are pretty much gone. This is in the area of The Promenade Shops of Center Valley.

As stated above, this is a great view of the former New Jersey Zinc Mine in Friedensville (Center Valley), PA. The view is facing Camp Meeting Road, which is in the background of this shot. Operations stopped at this mine about a year after this photo was taken. Almost all of the buildings in the photo are still standing, including the silos. This is located at 4401 Camp Meeting Road.

I worked there very briefly in 1970 after being laid off at the Bethlehem Steel. At that time, the depth was 1,375 feet. I had heard that they later reached a depth of 2,000 feet or thereabouts before closing for good. On my last day, a miner was killed when the ceiling caved in on him as he was attempted to roof bolt through a clay seam. The pay was good and even higher paying overtime was available virtually anytime, but that was enough for me. I left that day and never went back.
