Motel
LynBurke Motel in Lyndonville at intersection of rte 5 & 114
Lynburke Motel Lyndonville Vt
Demolished ca. 2019/2020.
791 Main Street/US-5, Lyndonville, VT. Intersection of Main Street (US-5), VT-114 (E Burke Road), and VT-122 (Stevens Loop) - the Lynburke Motel. This business suffered from a fire in the mid-1990s, and the main building was updated to look more like a house - wood siding, standard sized windows, shutters, and a porch with balcony. By the early 2010s the right side entrance/exit had been put to disuse, the sign in the center grass area was upgraded, and the pool was fenced in. Unfortunately the business' proximity to the Passumpsic River would be its demise - in the spring of 2018 Lyndonville suffered extreme flooding, in of which much of this intersection was under a significant amount of water. The motel property was damaged heavily by the floodwaters and was boarded up. In late 2019 or early 2020 all buildings on the property (the motel building and the small outbuilding behind it) were demolished, the pool filled in, and the Lynburke Motel signage was removed. In a recent update (Feb. 2024) the property owner stated they plan on building a gas station at this location.
At the rear of the property is the Sanborn-Centre Covered Bridge, which still stands today. This bridge was moved from the other end of Lyndonville in 1960 by Milton Graton, and suffered damage in several floods. After concerns the bridge may collapse due to broken supports in 2013 the town set forward a plan to restore the bridge and build a park at the southern end.
