This is my family's HOMEPLACE. Built by Jesse Carter in 1895. My great grand father (Leonard Fretwell Kennon) bought it in 1900. He and his 6 sons farmed 600+ acres on either side of Hog Mountain Rd. He died w/o a will so 9 kids split the acres with the widow Dora Ward Kennon getting 120. My grand parents (Oliwee Kennon and John Glenn Cobb) moved in with Dora in 1922. Like most old southern homes there were 4 rooms with a hall down the middle. Left were 2 BR, Right was parlor & one BR. The hallway spilled out to a wing in the back . The wing contained the kitchen, DR & bath. Before the well on the wing, there was a well by the oak (bottom left). The dirt drive you see used to go around the house, exiting at the same oak & well. There was a porch across the front. During the Depression, my grand parents housed the teachers and principal of Carither's school. The upstairs was a LONG room of beds, remember the Kennon'Is had six sons. This long room was used for 3-4 teachers during the depression, the principal(& wife) had a small apt on ground floor. In 1950, my grandfather had the house remodeled by removing the porch across the front and removing the wing in the back. He added a kitchen on the right and a raised patio on the left. My parents changed the upstairs into a BR, bath, nursery, kitchen & den. The center window upstairs was my 1st home 1965 :) We sold the house & 5 acres to a retired couple (Whitehead) in 1980. They sold to a family who worked at UGA. After we sold the farm to John Washington he bought the house from the UGA folks. Sorry for the long comment but I get choked up looking at my home place.
