U.S. Ecology located north of Neponset opened their Radioactive (RAD) burial site in 1967 and their Chemical (CHEM) burial site in 1969.
In 1978 the (RAD) site discontinued burials and in 1983 the (CHEM) site discontinued burials.
In 1988 the (RAD) was permanently closed and a settlement agreement was made with the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety.
In 1998 the (RAD) site was turned over to the State of Illinois.
