Pretty sure this is the old Velsicol Chemical plant north of Marshall, IL on Illinois route 1. It has been gone for years, thanks to the EPA shutting it down. The ponds were capped off, and is now just a lot of green grass. And the nasty stench that hung in the air and permeated everything is gone.

Velsicol Plant in Marshall, Illinois. Plant was closed by EPA and land is now empty.

Clark County Historical Society has several neat artifacts from Velsicol including a mortar and pestle from the lab and a uniform worn by a member of the Velsicol baseball team.

Some records of Velsicol are held at Marshall Public Library.

The reclamation site now serves as a soccer field.

I was a Marshall resident from birth until we relocated when I was 6. Both sides of my parents’ families remained in Marshall/Clark County, IL. The lingering smell of that plant still resonates today. I spent countless summers with my family, in Marshall and remember vividly.

I knew several people who worked there.
