This was the Benke Greenhouse on Bilter Road, next to what is now the Illinois Prairie Path. Rose Benke was a well-known expert in growing African Violets. A Chicago Tribune article from January 1973 described her love of the flower and expansion of the greenhouse starting in the late 1950s. The greenhouse buildings are visible in aerial images through at least 1994, but by the late 1990s real estate development was closing in fast. The homes now here were constructed in the early 2000s.
