Our father, Joe Heger, who was the St. Charles veterinarian, remodeled this barn, which was originally a turkey farm, into his animal hospital in the late 50's. We lived in the farmhouse until 1969. He died in 1977, and the buildings were sold thereafter. They were eventually torn down.

Dr. Heger's barn was featured in "A Barn Sampler: Rural Architecture in Kane County" as an example of a barn converted to alternative uses. This booklet was a 1977 study prepared for Kane County Urban Development by the graduate students of Landscape Planning at the Illinois Institute of Technology. During an era of intense urban sprawl, the study was designed for awareness of the "beauty and historical importance of our farms." In his introductory letter to the citizens of the county, Kane County Board Chairman Philip B. Elfstrom noted "It is my hope that Kane County will be in the forefront not only in efforts to preserve farmland, but also farm structures."

Meanwhile, urban sprawl continued and many barns came down, including this one, although it did remain for many years after. Aerial photos from 2002 show the barn still standing, but by 2005 it had been cleared for commercial development. Where the house sits is now the Loyal Companions animal hospital and pet resort.
