St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The white church with steeple is the original church and the brick building is in 1973 the "newer" church with the school attached. My parents were married in that church in 1957. Today there is a new church for St. Joes.

At the bottom right is the old post office. Next to that is one of the fire stations prior to being added on to.

Busse Chevrolet on the bottom. The building still stands, but has been vacant for a long time.

I attended St. Joseph school here from 3rd through 8th grade which would have been 1971-1977. The old church with the steeple was the "Father Berger Hall" and we used it as a gym upstairs and lunchroom downstairs back then. The rectory is to the left of the Father Berger Hall, mostly hidden by the trees. The convent was the U-shaped building in the upper right of the picture. My best friend used to live across the field, just to the left in one of the older houses there. Their "new" church is in the open area mostly to the left and slightly in front of the convent. The school was closed a couple of years ago. Another friend used to live in the apartment above the firehouse and I was there a couple of times at noon when they used to sound the siren daily. It was a manual, crank type device that made a heck of a noise and whoever was cranking it had to endure that sound for what seemed like an eternity!

The home to the left of the old church was my great grandfather's John Amann, built about 1915.

Hi Dana, thank you for sharing the history of your great grandfather's home! We love hearing stories like these. Can you tell us more about what life was like in Lake County, IL around 1973? Did you spend much time in the area growing up? Also, since you mentioned the church, do you happen to know anything about its history? We're always eager to learn more about the communities our photos capture.
