Courtesy of Wikipediaβ A prototype built for training purposes was chosen to be located in Streator, Illinois in 1952. The Streator DEW-Line Training Center became operational in 1956 and closed when operations were moved to Colorado Springs in 1975. This site was located about 3-1/2 miles NW of Ancona, Illinois. Weβre looking west.
I moved to Streator with my father, Syd Heaney, from Ottawa Canada in 1973. He was one of the Canadian weather instructors for the DEW line school. He joined Bill Verge who was already in Streator. We went from Illinois to Colorado in 1978 then Colorado to Winnipeg in 1983. My dad loved the school and the students. After he passed in I went back to Streator in 2004 and tried to find the old school, but the corn was too high and I couldn't find it. Would love to see it again.
