Intersection of Chapel Hill, Johnsburg/Wilmot Rd, and Church St. Intersection is now a roundabout. Several of the buildings at the top of the picture are gone now.

I bought my 1976 Camaro new at smith's central garage from Fred j. smith

My grandfather was Fred J Smith ( owner) and his sons Fred Jr., Norb ( my father) and Harry worked there. Uncle Harry is still living.
Fred Sr lived in the White House to the right.
George Hiller’s grocery store is across the street and Jacob Fritz Insurance is to the left.

Smith's Central Garage (and Standard Gas Station) located at 2303 W. Johnsburg Rd. in Johnsburg. In 1918, this was the location of Central Garage and Repair Shop ownedy by J. B. Hetermann (a blacksmith) and C. M. "Cap" Bickler selling Buick and Oakland automobiles. In 1919, Henry W. Hetterman, brother of J.B., became 1/3 owner. In 1920 they began selling Cletrac tractors and Dodge Brothers Business Cars. In 1929, Fred J. Smith purchased the business from the Hetterman brothers and in 1930 he purchased the building and property from H. G. Saal. In 1935, Smith added the Standard Service Station. In 1955, the business name was changed to Smith's Central Garage and in 1964, it was a truck safety inspection station (No. 446). In 1968, he became an authorized Chevrolet dealer. Fred died in 1976 at the age of 80. The garage closed about 1984. Currently, the lot is vacant.

The white house, next to the garage, was the home of Fred J. Smith.

Johnsburg Food Mart (bottom of photo) was located at 2302 W. Johnsburg Rd. Joseph H. Hiller (1910-2006) purchased the Schaefer Building and opened the store in April 1951. Joseph owned the store until 1981. He was a foreman of the George Hiller and Sons Co., Captain of the McHenry Township Fire Department, Station 2 and their original firefighter. The food mart continued until about 1993.
