This was previously Walnut Grove School. In the early-1900s, Stephenson County school districts were organized as District 1 through District 145. Walnut Grove was District 1; Freeport was District 145 (and continues with that number today). Walnut Grove operated through at least the 1949-50 school year, when it had been absorbed by the Orangeville school district. The October 4, 1949 edition of the Freeport Journal-Standard reported that 20 Walnut Grove taxpayers had signed a petition asking to join the Durand (IL) school district to the east, rather than remain with Orangeville to the west. They were apparently unsuccessful, as students in this area do not cross county lines (Durand) to attend public school.
