So much has changed since this photo was taken. My family moved into this 1850s home in 1997 after Grayce and Barry Jones raised their family of four here. In the 1980s, they built the ranch home to the south of our property and were wonderful neighbors until their passings in 2012 and 2014. Since then, a few trees had to be removed from the front yard, the driveway has been widened, the back porch area has been redone, and the yard has been expanded. Today, there is a brick patio off the back porch area, the door has changed locations, and there’s a new three-car pole barn located at the top of the driveway (where the security light is featured in this photo.) We absolutely love our home and the history behind it. While we are still trying to figure out who built the home, we do know the Custer family lived here around the late 1850s and early 1860s. The Custer family was well known in Logansport/Cass County, and this property was known as “Home Nursery” north on the turnpike during that era. Archived newspapers state, L.B. Custer had more than 30,000 seeds on this property, including some apple trees. To the south of our property, there are still signs of an old apple orchard.
