The barn is gone. The slate roof has been replaced, and an addition has been made to the second floor. My husband and I purchased the property in 2015

I believe it was originally referred to as β€œthe Sherk’s place,” though I am not sure about the spelling.

It would have been Shirk. Ben Shirk was a dairy farmer who owned this farm when I was growing up...I spent several mornings helping with milking in the big barn. I grew up one house to the south (image 27). All of the buildings in image 27 are gone now.

Oh wow! Thank you for the information. We love this house, and I am trying to find out all the information I can about it.😊

Ben Shirk was my bus driver in the early 70's ! What a sweet man !!

Mary, what a small world

Hi Theresa, in case you come back to this page, here is some more information on the Shirks: Ben and Grace Shirk were the owners back when this photo was taken, as mentioned above. Ben died in 2002 and Grace in 2012. They had 10(!) children, five sons and five daughters, some of whom still live in the area. If you look at 1980 roll 163, image 2 is another shot of your farm. In the photo above, if you notice the vacant area above the house, back in the late 70's one of Ben's sons and his wife moved into a mobile home that was placed in that area. You can see the mobile home in 1980, roll 163, image 3. I grew up on the farm pictured in that image. Ben and Grace were very nice people and great neighbors. On my farm we raised Angus beef cattle, and Ben was very welcoming to letting me come "help" with the milking from time to time.

Hi, I am the son who put the trailer in the old apple orchard. Many great memories of this place! We farmed the land and milked cows for ten years in late 70's and early 80"s. We live in Mississippi today. Who is Joe, BTW?
