This was one of two buildings that had made up the Hamilton School in the middle of town; the larger building to the right had already been town down, and this building was no longer a school when the photo was taken. This building housed the gym, although by the last years of the school's operation, in the heart of the baby boom, the gym was partitioned into classrooms. The only time I was in this building was in first grade, in the fall of 1963, when our class walked over from the other school building next door to have our school photos taken.

Is this in Hamilton Indiana? If so I went there as a child. I believe the new Hamilton Elementary/ Jr./St. High School was ready in 1963/64?

Hi Nancy -- I think the high school and junior high on the south end of town were built around 1960. The building in the photo and the building just east of it, near the millpond of Hamilton Lake, were in use in 1963/1964, the year I attended first grade there. The new elementary, the one attached to the high school and junior high, opened in the fall of 1964.

Where was the cafeteria,exactly that the elementary children ate at? Any pictures of the inside the old school.What year did everyone switch over to the new school?

The elementary cafeteria was not in this building -- it was in a separate building to the right not shown in this photo because it had already been torn down when this pic was taken. This building originally held classrooms and a gym, but by the last few years of operation, the gym had been partitioned into four elementary classrooms because of the baby boom. This building and its companion building which was a story taller and older, were last used in the spring of 1964. That fall was when the elementary students moved to new quarters at the site of the high school and junior high on the south edge of Hamilton, the site that is still in use. I see past Question I asked back in 2020 and just now found the answers lol.If memories serve me correct when I went to school in Hamilton,I started 1st grade because they didn’t have kindergarten until my second year of school.I remember my sister just under me going,but not myself.I was actually held back in 1st grade because I just wasn’t ready to move unto second.If you could check the year kindergarten start there it would be nice to know.Thanks
