Wow, it's hard to believe it will be 40 years ago this Summer since my brother Lloyd and I were a part of the employee crew/team forming and slipping the famous million bushel cement grain silo named " Fat Albert " in Albert City , Ia. It was a new method/design from Sweden we were told that never was attempted before, where the huge several ton coned steel cap was made on the ground and slipped up with the slow curing wet cement underneath us as it rose to completion. Though it was very hard work and 12 hr. shifts ( ours was 7a:m - 7 p:m) we were ecstatic to make $6 per hr. and $12 per hr. for over time. Mom and Dad were not excited about us doing it with several men being killed recently before on the silo to the north. We could see our farmstead just east of Fat Albert about 2 and half miles to the east as we slipped up higher and higher each day. Lots of prayer for every ones safety during the process and all were happy and celebrating the final day of completion. Because of its success, a second successful silo of equal style and size, named "Big Bertha", soon followed. It was an experience at age 19 that was full of emotions and one I will never forget! :)
