This is my grandparents farm. My grandfather, William, or best known as Doc, was a long time veterinarian in the Lawrence community. At the farm, he had Belgian Draft horses, Holstein Dairy Cattle, and Shetland Ponies. What has changed? Well the farm is no longer there. In 1994, the Kansas Department of Transportation initiated a vote to make a highway that circles Lawrence, connecting I70, to 59, to K10, to 24/40. The vote passed and they began working on the western leg of the K10 bypass, the farm was smack in the middle of the path. The land was purchased by the state, the house moved to Franklin County, and big two story barn taken down piece by piece by Amish, and built again In South Central Kansas. The rest of the property was leveled and they Highway built.

I helped Peg with housecleaning for a short time. She is one of my most favorite memories of that time in my life. The Belgians were absolutely gorgeous and the bain of her existence. I can still hear her, southern lady voice...and the bits of wisdom she shared. I loved her.
