This property belonged to my grandparents, William F. and Grace Elkin. The house used to be surrounded by chickens, and cattle grazed the pasture. Part of this farm included the Elkins Prairie, a biodiverse tall grass prairie that made national news when a subsequent property owner and local environmentalists battled over preservation of the never-plowed prairie versus the owner’s property rights. The pristine prairie was eventually lost when it was plowed one day before dawn.
