Good place to stop for a pint of fried clams on the way back to Oakfield.

US 2 (County Rd) New Limerick about 1 mile west of the French Rd. Stack's Snacks - Elbridge and Lois Stackhouse raised their 3 kids ( Irene, Charlton, and Nena - my sister-in-law) here. 64 was middle the 8 years I worked here peeling potatoes (roughly 5000 lbs) and cutting into french fries, and making up hamburgers (97% fat free ground by Ora Hatfield, and probably by this time, Ronnie Henderson at what is now Cameron's market). Stack's price list at the time was hamburg $.30, Hot dog $.20, large ff $.40, pop (remember Fitzpatricks) .$10 (Orange was #1, Coke #2 and Pepsi #3), dairy cremes I think were from 5 to 15 cents, Milkshakes $.30. The onion rings were quite famous and the recipe for Lois's dip has been handed down to the grandkids. Still waiting to do a quality assurance test on their renditions. The pickup was a late model red Chev and the car a Studebaker. Don't recognize the van so it was probably a customer and not a supplier sitting out front in this late afternoon picture. In earlier years, Elbridge would be coming around the local farms twice a day during potato picking hawking coffee, pastries, pop and candy trying to get his fair share of our $.30 / barrell hard earned money. He had a green early to mid 50's Ford pickup. At age 13 or 14 that was the first vehicle I drove on a public road. He and I were cutting Christmas trees one Saturday in November and had the truck loaded to the gills. Elbridge might have been as well so he let me drive. I successfully met the challenge of keeping a "very light on the front end" Ford out of the ditch and away from the telephone poles (remember they were used in those days to connect hard wired phones to your house).
Carlton and Dottie live there now and I can still hand peel potatoes faster than 98% of folks.

You know you are getting old when you type Irene and you know it is Williard and Iris. Thanks for the correction.
