Presque Isle, ME Main St. Zayre and Woolworths stores

Woolworths is now Country Collectables. Zayre eventually became a Rite Aid. It is now a thrift store.

Set the location.

Intersectin of main at and Academy st. In PI.

I worled linch counter @ Woolworth 9-15-69 to 1-5-70. They laid me off because they closed. I went to Converse put in application & started next day. I worked there until they closed 8-1985 if memory serves me right!

To the left of Zayre's is the B&A Office--Bangor and Aroostook (train and bus line) office, it's been there for years. Randy Grant worked there in that tiny office space. Fond memories...........this shopping strip is at the bottom of Academy Street (hill) on southern Main Street. Zayre's was later moved to the northern side of town in the late 60s or early 70s.

Randy Grant was my husband's uncle. He passed away about two years ago.

this was before my time

Main Street Friday night was shopping night, everyone came out, ladies would shop and the men would sit in their cars or walk around and visit with other men. Parking was a premium on those nights.

Zayre was on north st, and it became Smyth IGA then became and Health Care Center.
