This little house is immediately south of the Carpenter homestead, on which my grandfather James A. Carpenter was born. I can't find an ariel photo on this site of that house but the youngest son, Edson Carpenter, Jr., lived in this little house (shown in this photo) until the time of his death. The property now belongs to someone else (not related) and he lives in a small house behind the original house, which is falling to the ground.
Homestead was originally deeded to Nancy Jane Brothers Mocherman (sometimes spelled Mockerman) as a Civil War widow's pension for her husband Jacob Mocherman (Jacob is buried in Flewelling Cemetery on Ritt Rd. just north of this property, and his headstone is still there.) Their youngest daughter (of 18 children), Susana Reufenis Mocherman, married my great-grandfather Edson Carpenter, and they raised their children on this farm. Their son, James Abraham Carpenter, is my grandfather. Other siblings were Nina, Lina, Perry, Golda/Goldie, and Lewis Carpenter.
James Abraham married Mattie Eva Schoolcraft (also from Bellaire) and lived in Grand Rapids, MI, for the rest of their lives.
