I grew up going to this church (Newark Mennonite Church). This photo is old enough to not have the fellowship hall attached.
I went to this Church when i was growing up ,its now been torn down .
Newark Church of God in Christ Mennonite built in 1920....3120 W. Johnson Rd. Ithaca, Michigan....demolished in October of 2015 after being replaced by a new church around the corner on Alger Rd.
This landmark was built in 1920 by hand by the Mennonite men with local lumber. Buggy sheds surrounded the church on three sides. An addition to the front was added in 1948 with another addition added on the back in 1951. A long and lower addition was added on the left side in 1980 after the picture was taken. A wide staircase led from the front doors to the sanctuary on the second level. The sanctuary which included two balconies had a seating capacity of nearly 600 people. Through renovations after three separate fires the church faithfully served the Newark congregation(membership peaked at 325) for nearly 95 years. After the congregation completed a new church in 2014 it sat empty for a short time. It was deemed unusable and after it's interior and furnishings were removed and sold on auction it was torn down in late 2015.
