5522 Plain Road was home sweet home for the Barber family from 1967 to around 1990. My parents, Ralph and Mary Jo Barber, worked for Mayville Schools during most of this time. Their children - Judy, Jenni and Rafe (me) graduated from Mayville. This photo from 1976 was taken looking to the west. The house is mostly blocked by the beautiful trees in our front yard. Sadly, one of the tall spruce trees was destroyed by lightning, and a really bad ice storm took out several of the maples. A second, larger barn was located southwest of the pictured barn. That barn was destroyed by fire in the 1970's. I'm not sure what year the house was built but I know that it's well over 100 years old. We owned 80 acres at one time but my father sold the "back 40" and used the money to build an addition with a family room, second bathroom and updated kitchen. I was 11 years old when this picture was taken. Perhaps I'm inside with my folks, playing in the barn, or in my tree house wondering why this plane is flying so low.

The Barber Farm, as my father called it, is on its third owner since my parents sold it. I became friends with the second owners, the Ward family, and took my daughters to visit. The Ward family gave us a tour and showed us some of the wonderful improvements they made. I've not met the current owner but hope to take my son there someday to show him where his dad grew up.
