This was originally the Charlie & Ida Mathison farm, and was farmed by their son & grandson, Axel & Raymond Vaage, for many years. Charlie Mathison was my great-great grandmother's brother, so the Vaage's are cousins to my grandfather. Charlie owned this land in 1899, but this farm was built some time later. Charlie was born in Norway (1870), and the Mathison family came to Artichoke when he was 9, so he grew up on the Andrew & Ellen Mathison homestead, which was one mile to the north of this farm (later it was owned by Jens & Alma Sorenson, then Andrew Danielson). The farm was passed down to Ivy Mathison, who married Axel Vaage. Raymond & Ann Vaage were farming here when this photo was taken. They retired in 1981 but continued to live on the farm until they passed away in 1999 and 2009, respectively. The farm has been vacant since 2009; the house and some of the sheds remain but most of the grove was removed recently.
