Searles Bar and Grill
I lived in Searles between 1943-1945 . I was 8-9 years old at the time. At that time my uncle, Rudy Gulden and his wife owned and operated a grocery store shown to the left of the corner building and my godparents, Alfred and Olivia (Gulden)Schnobrich operated the Searles post office, also to the left of the corner building. At one time, my grandfather, Gerhard Gulden and his wife, Cornelia (Fischer) lived in and operated a bar on the site that is now the Searles Bar and Grill, but in May, 1911, the building and many of the adjacent buildings burned to the ground due to a defective chimney in the attic above the kitchen of the Gulden home. I have a copy of the newspaper article describing the fire and photos of the fire. The article also gives the names of the business owners involved and the monetary amount of their loss.
