In May 1892 a Presbyterian church for blacks was organized near Caswell's Semora Community. The church building was erected soon after the congregation was organized. Called Elim Church, it also was known as Palmer's Chapel, which honored the first pastor Reverend Boswell B. Palmer, who died in 1915. Reverend Palmer had several daughters, all of whom became school teachers. The church was active until 1928.
