McDowell' s store across from Kings high school,Kings mill.

This is at the intersection of Columbia Road and Wilson avenue. McDowell's had the best lemonade! It's directly across from what is now the Kings Mills Junior High (originally the high school which has since been built next door on Columbia Rd.). Jane McDowell ran this store in my high school years. This was in the GTE telephone area which in these days (1968) was 513-398-XXXX. If you lived in the south end of the Kings Mills school district, such as 20 Mile Stand, it is/was the Cincinnati Bell exchange and it was a toll call to call home. Rather than call collect or pay for the call most families (ours included) used a code. If you were at school for extracurricular activities and needed to call to be picked up when you were done you would call home and let it ring twice and then hang up. This alerted home that you were done without paying for a toll call and it was time for your ride home to come get you. Smiles.
