Photo 57-OWA-2

Kings High school,Kings Mills,OH.

This was built as Kings High School on Columbia Road and is now the Junior High with a newer High School directly to the left of the school above. In the rear of the photo you can see the original 440 yard cinder track which encircled the football field. It's still there today but the cinders have long since been upgraded to a modern day synthetic surface. If you look close enough at the top of the photo at the edge just to the right of OWA-2 you can see the old bridge that crossed the Little Miami River at the Peters Cartridge Factory on Grandin Road. It was one of the old-style Iron bridges commonly in use in those days (the same as you'd find most anywhere, like Fosters, etc). It's very difficult to see without magnification (however you can join the site for free and it allows you to use a magnifying tool on photos, just fyi).

It is at the Little Miami River that the road changes names from Kings Mills Road to Grandin Road. That's because once upon a time on this side of the river, Kings Mills Road ran south along the river to Fosters where you will still find a truncated section of Kings Mills Road along the river. Across the river running parallel for generations was the Little Miami Railroad which has long since been out of service and has been paved to become the bike trail.

You can still see a few of the cement footings for the old bridges all along the river if your explore through the woods. Not sure about the one in the photo but there are some north of the Peters Cartridge Factory.

Hi there! Thank you for your comment about the old bridges in Warren County. It's fascinating to hear about the remnants you've spotted along the river. We'd love to learn more about the area during that time. Can you recall any other landmarks or unique features near the Peters Cartridge Factory from 1968? Feel free to share any other memories or details you might have.

If you visit historicaerials.com and go back to the 50's and 60's you can see an old bridge north of the Peters Cartridge Factory. The path of the road and abutments are still there and it's used as a rope-swing now. Also just north of that is what I believe was a dam. It is still partially visible on current day google maps. There is a 10-foot wall when it reaches the land, not sure what was there but it is pretty cool. There are a lot old structures and little remnants all over the woods in that area.
