This mill still stands along Route 441 but the farmhouse has since burned down or been demolished. The mill is a local landmark known for the doors having been painted to look like playing cards - namely the Ace of Hearts! It sits dangerously close to Route 441 North of Bainbridge, Conoy Twp., Lancaster County, PA
My grand parents owned the farm and I used to go there a lot.
My father painted the doors. The mill sits, as you say, "dangerously close to 441" because originally the road was planned to go through the area where the mill sits, but because it was a long-time landmark, the route was adjusted just enough to avoid having to demolish the mill. The house was demolished after my mother died.
I grew up there....best "playground" ever!
Susan - the construction of the mill is so amazing! The 'foundation' stones are enormous! I still marvel at how straight the walls are that face Rt.441. Even though there are portions that have collapsed, it is a fantastic structure. Also, I can still see the fireplace chimney of your family home! I never knew why the mill was so close to the highway so thanks for clarifying.
