These houses still stand along Edna Road in Hempfield Township, but they look very different now. The house on the right started out as the one-room Fairview School (the center section with slate roof and three tall windows). The land for the school was deeded to the school district in 1868. When the school closed, the property became the Fairview Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. The sections to the left and right of the schoolhouse were added to house the minister and his family and to add a vestibule and restrooms to the building. The church closed in the 1960's and the building became a private home. See also photos 3-DWE-13 and 18-GWE-20.
