This is the 1826 Oakland Plantation house on Storm Branch Road in Beech Island, South Carolina, listed on the National and South Carolina Registers of Historic Places. My husband and I purchased this property in 2015. Much of the land surrounding the house has been cleared since this photograph was taken. The two out-buildings shown are gone. An original dairy house remains. A shed-row barn has been added behind the home, along with four fenced pastures. Numerous substantial updates have been made to the infrastructure of the home (original tin-tile roof replaced, new windows, new shutters, new front porch pillars, steps and railings, plus much more) but the antebellum style and character of the original “I-house” structure have been carefully preserved. The physical structure (the foundations, piers and chimney footings) was in poor condition and received a complete and lengthy overhaul. Recently (November 2020), widespread clearing of the 5.05 acre property has been carried out, removing scrub brush, weed trees, vines and wild wisteria. A comprehensive new landscaping plan (including a perimeter horse bridle-path/trail, new trees, bushes and shrubs, and new brick light columns at the secondary entrance) is in the works for 2021.
