nothing but the memories last...

Hello,
Do you have a memory you would like to share with us about the property? We love to hear the history behind our photos.

nothing noteworthy but here is a little. built around 1908 by J.F. Baxter of Nansemond county. My guess is that he was what we would now call a general contractor. the brick columns on the front porch were all topped with a concrete cap with raised lettering cast showing "J.F. Baxter" and " Nansemond". nice work for the time. by my own observations, the house appeared to have been built with several sections added as time went on. standard farmhouse construction for the time.

We were a 3 generation family all living there at once. again not unusual for the times. it had no AC or central heat. warmth ( as long as you were in the same room ) was provided by a large "Seigler" kerosene heater with blowers in a central room. for my first 10 years there was also a large cast iron wood cook stove in the kitchen. when my Grandmother would be cooking in the summer, the heat was almost intolerable in there. I'm certain that stove would be highly sought after today, as I am sure it was a pre 1900's build.

As with all other things, life happens. the older folks pass on, and the young people move out and time takes its toll on everything. my mother was the last to leave, due to age and needing to finish her time living with my sister. by that time, the house was in need of too many repairs and updates to bring up to any modern standard and it was sold to a local business man in 2019 and was later demolished.

your photo really brings back many memories. thank you very much!
