Photo 1-JVE-10

My grandparents, Orville & Ada Lee, owned this dairy farm when the picture was taken. This photo must have been taken in early spring as the tobacco beds appear to have been planted and covered. My grandfathers' pickup is parked next to the barn. They retired from farming in 1981 and moved to a new home in Westby. Only the farmhouse and nearby metal garage building stand today.

My husband Frank Malin spent many happy summers at this farm belonging to his aunt and uncle. Orville was Frank’s Mom’s brother (Hazel Lee Malin). Orville and Hazel’s parents (Hilda and Emer) had moved to town, and the farm was much more fun.

Bruce Halverson, we are wondering if Maxine or Doris was your mom?

Doreen, Doris is my mom, Maxine is my godmother!

Brian, my name is Frank Malin and Doris and Maxine are my first cousins. My mother Hazel was Orville's sister. From 1950 to 1955 when I was age 6-11, my mom and I spent a month each Summer visiting her parents, grandma Hilda and grandpa Emer Lee,who lived in Newry about a mile from Orville's farm. I visited my cousins many times-Doris, LeRoy, Russel, Maxine and Ivan. Orville and LeRoy coached our little league team. We played ball in the yard between house and tobacco shed. I loved the farm and all my cousins. Later in life I marvel at how hard they worked and what good people they were.
