Hi David! How fascinating that you grew up in this area during the 50s and 60s. We'd love to hear more about your experiences. What kind of farming did you do on the 128-acre land back then? Has much changed since this photo was taken in 1968? Your memories would give us valuable insight into the history of Richland County.

More from my memory ......
We usually had two crops out every year, corn and a grain, in two major fields at 14 acre each. We had another 14 acre field for hay. We prep the fields with a Farmall-C, three bottom plow. We had another neighbor farmer plant, harvest and bale the hay. About 20 acres was also in pasture. There was 28 acres in woods. There was a major hill on the property, about 26 acres we just kept mowed. An all year flowing creek ran through the property.

Animals, we had 3 horses, later border 2 more, a couple of beef cows, Angus and Hereford and around 20 sheep. My brother and I were in 4-H, he had cows, I had sheep.
We left the farm in 1963 as my brother and I went off to collage. My father always had a job in Mansfield at the Ohio Brass.

Changes ... major. The person we sold the farm to (1963) did major changes to the house .. and dug a pond in front of it. Over the next 5 years he sold off all the land, except 12 acres which had the old house, barn and some pasture, to 7 other people. One local farmer bought the two major crop fields, the woods was sold to the adjoining Boy Scouts Camp, the other land was sold to various people who build a Big houses and a pond. Other then the farmer, none tilled their land or keep any animals.

Over time the old farm house and barn (12 acres) have gone through 5 different hands.
In 2010 the barn fell down and was replaced with small pole barn.

History: I still have all of the handwritten deeds to the various (10) owners of the 128 acres over time, from 1820 through 1951. Further, it was belived that one owner, James Woods, from 1855 - 1887 was part of the Underground Railroad system. (the creek ran next to the house)

I feel the years spent on the farm were educational, hard work, but fun.
