24356 W. State Rt. 120, looking NE.

In the upper right hand corner of the photo is part of the historic Fort Hill Cemetery established in 1847. A number of the early settlers (Marble, Seeber and Paddock family) of the Fort Hill Community are buried in this cemetery. The cemetery was basically abandoned and the title of the cemetery is now held by Avon Township. In 2018, a preservation and restoration project began cleaning up the property of overgrown trees, gravestones preserved and cleaned. The cemetery is located near the NE corner of Rt. 120 and Fairfield Rd. (formerly Fort Hill Rd). See the website forthillcemetery.org for further information.

The historic Fort Hill Cemetery (partially seen in the upper right hand corner) was officially established in 1847. This photo (1965) is the earliest known photo of the cemetery. It is located in Avon Township near the corner of Rte 120 and Fairfield Rd. in Lake County, IL. In 2015, in search for the grave site of Lucy (Backus) Paddock (1784-1860), my 3rd great grandmother, I discovered the cemetery was mostly abandoned. Since then the cemetery has been mostly preserved and restored: removing trees and overgrown brush; preserving broken and leaning gravestones; plus cleaning each one. Research on the genealogy of those buried in the cemetery and the history of the Fort Hill community can viewed on my website: forthillcemetery.org
