23377 W. Chardon Rd., looking SE. Farm dates back to 1837 and is still there.
Fredrick farm Then Roy Krop. Or CHARDON farms
This property, known today as Kamins Farm Sanctuary, is located on 23377 W. Chardon Rd. in Fremont Township west of Rte. 60. The farm land consisting of over 300 acres, previously owned by John F. Cueno, Jr. (1931-2019), stretched from Fairfield Rd. to the east, Chardon Rd. to the north and Erhart Rd. on the south. In 2015, the 338 acre property was purchased by the Lake County Forest Preserve District and borders the Ray Lake Forest Preserve.
John Cuneo, Jr. was raised as a child where the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens is today at 1350 Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, IL and his former Hawthorn Mellody Farms. As a philanthropist, he donated the Ceuno Mansion along with its 100 acres to Loyola University.
I remember a number of times driving past the Cuneo farm and seeing a herd of buffalo, elk or Italian Deer on their property. The drive along Chardon Road always had a rustic feel to it.
