St Matthew Lutheran Church and school.

Located at 24480 N. Old McHenry Rd. in Hawthorn Woods, IL, the St. Matthew Church was charted in 1863 and a school room added in 1879. The adjoining cemetery was established in 1864. In 1889, 4 acres were purchased and a one-room school was built. In 1923, the church was destroyed by fire with services held in the school auditorium. The current church was completed in 1949. Since then the church and school have been expanded.

The original clapboard church burned down in December, 1942. The church in this photo was completed in 1949, with the addition added in the 1960's.
