Vandegrift House on SR 39 between Danville and Clayton (see geotag). SR 39 slightly bends to curve around this house. Hidden in summer behind thick overgrowth of trees.
Home of Jacob Vandegrift (1816-1876) and Esther Keen Vandegrift (1811-1894). Unconfirmed history from IHSSI 1989 Survey: Built in 1854 for Richard Martin Sr. (1806-1871) and purchased/moved by the Vandegrifts in 1861. It is said that Jacob Vandegrift placed the house in the middle of the road, and made the County move the road around it (primary sources for these claims unidentified).
The Vandegrifts daughter, Frances (1840-1914), married Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
