The Gayla Ballroom.
This ballroom, roller rink and restaurant was
built by my grandparents and sat on the west edge of lndependene, Iowa. It hosted many popular bands, and community events and was a great place to eat. It was sold in the 70's and was consumed by fire a few years later. A Super 8 hotel now sits where it once was
Hi Barbara,
Did you visit a lot growing up? Which part was your favorite, the ballroom, roller rink or restaurant?
Yes, I spent a lot if time there growing up. My mother helped her mother with the cooking, sometimes we were lucky enough to get to eat there. As kids we helped set up tables for events and clean up after. The best part was roller skating when I was younger. Also going to some dances when older. My uncle added the restaurant called the Jungle Inn to the south side of the building. Two of my sisters worked there. Other family members shared in running and helping throughout the many years my grandparents owned it.
