I grew up on this farm. To the north of the house was a large cistern that provided water for household use. This house had a full bathroom (tub, stool, vanity) and for the 1930s that was a modern home! To the left of the farm, or west, of the buildings in the field was another cave-like cement feature that was open on one end that was spring fed that kept the field animals with fresh water and saved Dad a lot of time taking care of the cattle in that field, and sometimes the horses. To the north of the silo was a cave (again built a lot like the cattle waterer only a cave with a door that we kept our storage of vegetables over the winter (it was also the storm shelter). There was a windmill that pumped water to the horse tank and for water for the hog shed. On the left was the cow and horse barn (cows below and horses above), north of that was the machine shed. The white building on north was not there in the 30s/40s. To the east (right) of the barn was a corn crib. The building south of the corn crib and the 2 buildings south of the silo were not there in the 30s/40s but the long hog shed was. The two little white buildings to the north of the hog shed were not there or the one north of the two little white sheds. This was a great place for a kid to be raised on and their were 4 of us! The place was built by Mr. Hartz and he knew a lot about building a working farm. I lived here from 1933 to 1942. My folks rented it from an insurance company and Dutch Hart was their field manager who became lifelong friends of my parents.
