The former Burnham School, Town of Arundel, just off Lombard Road. Now a private home.
In 1966 I purchased the building from John G. Smith a realtor in town who had purchased the 6 buildings in the North Kennebunkport (Now Arundel) school district. I had observed it as an operating school & then it was unoccupied-only a rowboat. John had sold it to a fisherman in K'Port named Brooks for $1,000. We observe that it was not being worked on and asked Smith if he knew what the story on the building was. He said Brooks could not keep up the loan payments. So he turned it over to us for $1,200.
I was a school teacher who summered in Kennebunkport, working at the Trolley museum. And my family wanted to keep us together for the summers, so in 1966 we took out a loan and paid it off in a few years. We have since made it a year-round dwelling with a cellar, running water, heat, etc.
Often (but less so every year), when I'm working in the front area, people who identify themselves as former students will stop by.
