Downtown Troy, Ohio - looking at the NW corner of the public square. The large department store and the one next to it burned down many years ago. This is now where Prouty Plaza is. Prouty Plaza is a public gathering place and the location of the outdoor Summer Concert Series. There is now a large fountain in the center of the square and beautiful landscaping. The house behind Ullman's is gone and this area is now a large parking lot. Same with the houses across Cherry St. to the left of that house.

I am from Troy, Ohio, and my cousin (2nd or 3rd) is responsible for that corner of the Square being Prouty's Plaza now. He became angry at some one, some thing, in Uhlman's department store, and burned it to the ground.

Right in the juncture of the old Uhlman's building and frontage there used to contain the Gillis Taxi Co. and Brumbaugh's Restaurant. There was a third small bsiness, perhaps insurance office, in that area and at one time, Web's Auto Parts was where later Mr. Bill's and now La Piazza is located.

Drove thru the square so many times.Marched thru there also (Strawberry Festival) Mom worked on the opposite corner before us kids were born.GC Murphy.

I am curious to know if anyone knows the actual date that Uhlman's burnt down. I moved away from Troy in the summer of 1970 but I remember my mom driving us by the store when we heard that it burnt down. I believe the Mayflower Cinema was and may still be located just to the left of the adjacent building that burnt down with the Uhlman's building.

A newspaper article about the fire was dated March 14, 1970. The fire was probably the 13th.

My parents bought Brumbaighs restaurant in 1958 and operated it till 1963. They sold it to Lu Rife and it became Lu’s Restaurant

Hello Steve,
What kind of restaurant was Brumbaighs? Did you have a favorite meal there?
