Posted on 05/16/2011 by Lance Roper in Mystery Monday

Another week, another mystery! Here is the entry for this week. Read the guidelines below, then comment and be sure to include a link to a corresponding map.

Here are the guidelines,

  • If you can correctly identify the photo with a link to Google Maps showing where it is, or should be*, you win! Leave a comment here on the blog or on our Facebook Page.
  • Every Friday we will reveal the photo and congratulate the winner! (The first to post the correct answer & link)
  • Each weekly winner will receive a coupon for $50 off their next Aerial Photo purchase, or simple bragging rights! Whichever you prefer. (Make sure to provide adequate contact info.)

(*It is estimated that 40% of photos document places that are no longer standing. So, if you can tell us where the subject of the photo used to be, that will work too.)

Enjoy!

Sam, is there anything unique about this church or location other than the cross in the road, that we should be looking for?...that would be a nice little clue.

Yes, Linda - Of course! Here is a small clue.... Woody & Arlo would have felt right at home in this county.

Good luck! (This really is a great photo, isn't it?)

Thanks Sam, and yes it is a wonderful photo. This is the kind of photo you would want even without a connection to the place.

I'm here at the cross road and no place to go! Tried the obvious from your clue like NY, OK, MA, and a few others, then started on "Guthrie" cities and counties.

I have felt from the beginning that this was in Iowa or Ohio from the start...and am still stuck on Iowa.

We have one main road, with a side drive going through to farms. I don't think this church has been at this location a long time or the tree by the propane tank would be larger......so has it been moved to this location?...or is it not that old? Is this another one of those that was built for a movie prop.....don't think so, because of the wear in the road across the street for parking............Anyone.....any help out there?

I need another clue before going any further.....tough one Sam.

You got it Linda, This is from Guthrie, Iowa. Good work! Keep it up, you can do it. :)

OK, finally found it by map first, than lucky enough to find a current photo of it! The tree I was so worried about in back has grown and another has grown, even a bush or two. It now has concrete steps and a handicap ramp. Has a new front on it. There is parking across the road and the road goes no further. It was closed, but is open again. This building dates back to between 1850's to 1870's and was moved from Morrisburg which was for one year called Fairview..(a railroad bypass and bad tornado caused the towns destruction in 1870)...now if it was first moved to the town of Dale I have no idea.....further research would be required.

I think people associate this with being in Panora more than Guthrie Center.

It is located in Guthrie Center, Guthrie, Iowa, you can go to this site and look for church listings and click on MORRISBURG Church, it will show you on the map (letter G): http://www.city-data.com/county/Guthr...

If you go here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grandpas...
you can see a current photo.

A little history of where this building came from can be found (including another photo) at:

Look for "The Sad Case of Morrisburg"
