Taliferro Market was located on the Old Nashville Hwy. at Hilltop in Smyrna, TN since the 1970s. In addition to groceries, they were the Purina Dealer for that area, supplying feed for cows, horses, hogs, beef, poultry and calves.

When I first moved to Tennessee in 1977, I lived in Lascassas just down from the Brown Store. Old Peggy and Ben were the owners of the little country grocery where you could buy gas and groceries or come in for a bologna sandwich and watch the old gentlemen play checkers. They were the nicest old couple. In 1981, Ben had a stroke and in critical condition. When Peggy found out, she said I can't live without her husband, Ben, she had a heart attack. Both died on the same day, 3/26/1981. Ben Brown Jr. inherited the store and operated it for many years and then it eventually closed. There was a restaurant in it once, but they couldn't make a go of it. Now the store operates as a venue for special events. I saw Melinda Brown Black, the other day, and she said business at the venue is thriving. Melinda is the fourth generation to operate the old store.
