Located at 6161 W Grand Av, the Holiday Inn West. Originally this area was not part of Gurnee. With a major crossroads of Grand Av and Interstate 94 the City of Waukegan saw the growth potential and had plans to grow around Gurnee. Waukegan was annexing south of Gurnee to the west of Milwaukee Av (Rt 21) and annexing north along Yorkhouse Rd including the Midland Country Club. Gurnee Mayor Richard Welton and Waukegan Mayor Robert Sabonjian worked out an agreement. The Gurnee zoning and planning commission made way to protect the future of its community rather than being surrounded by the City of Waukegan as an island. The road (upper) that goes past the Holiday Inn is now Tri State Parkway that runs south to Washington St. The original entrance to Warren Cemetery was from Grand Av at the bottom of the photo.
