The Posey, Illinois elevator and silos, located along the Norfolk and Western Railway. View looks southwest.
Vogel Elevator, operated by the late Martin Vogel for nearly 60 years. On August 28, 1967 this was the site of the worst train accident in Clinton County history. The switch for the siding (where the grain cars are parked in this photo) was left open when a 125-car train passed through at about 50 mph. Both engines left the rails and came to rest 3 feet from the storage bins. Forty-two freight cars derailed, some stacked four high. Luckily, neither engine overturned after leaving the rails and no injuries were reported of the crew in the engines or caboose.
At the time of the accident, this was the Southern Railway Co. In 1980, it merged with Norfolk & Western to become Norfolk Southern. The railcars in this photo display the Southern Railway logo.
Vogel Elevator became Breese Grain in the 2000s; Breese was sold to the Top Ag cooperative in 2022.
