Enco Gas Station corner of Interstate Drive and Rt 40 St. Elmo, Illinois.
Looking west at an ENCO 'Happy Motoring!' service station, located in the southwest corner of U. S. Route 40 and Interstate Drive, St. Elmo, Illinois. From a 2023 Street View, the 2-bay repair shop remains, but with a sign that reads "Eagle Feather Archery". Today, 2024, however, it sits abandoned. The motel to the west, today, also sits in disrepair.
I can read the word: HUMBLE at the far right side of the service station. Regarding the motel to the west, I cannot make out the writing on the sign next to the highway.
Humble Oil and Refining Co. was the marketing subsidiary for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Since they, Jersey Standard, were barred from using the ESSO brand in the Midwest, in 1959, they formed Humble Oil, and introduced the ENCO brand to compete with Standard of Indiana (AMOCO).
